What is an LLM?
The Basics
A Large Language Model (LLM) is like a very advanced pattern recognition system trained on millions of texts. It doesn't "know" things the way humans do—it predicts what words should come next based on patterns it learned during training.
Think of it as having read countless books, articles, and conversations, then learning to generate responses by recognizing patterns. It's excellent for drafting text, exploring ideas, creating study guides, and holding thoughtful conversations—but it's not accessing a database of facts or browsing the internet in real-time.
How It Actually Works
During training, the LLM analyzed billions of sentences to learn relationships between words, concepts, and ideas. When you ask a question, it:
- Breaks your input into smaller units (tokens)
- Processes these tokens through multiple layers of neural networks
- Predicts the most likely next word based on patterns it learned
- Continues this prediction process word by word until it completes a response
This means the AI is fundamentally a prediction engine, not a knowledge retrieval system. It generates text that follows learned patterns, which is why it can sound confident even when wrong.
How Answers Are Formed
Context is Everything
AI responses aren't prophecy or divine revelation—they're pattern-based predictions. The quality of your answer depends heavily on the context you provide. When you give clear instructions about your goal, intended audience, desired tone, and length, the AI can generate much more useful responses.
Think of it like giving directions to a helpful assistant: vague requests get vague results, while specific guidance produces focused, relevant answers. The AI doesn't read your mind or understand your unstated assumptions—it works with what you explicitly provide.
The Answer Generation Process
When you ask a question, here's what happens behind the scenes:
- Input Processing: Your question is analyzed for intent, tone, and key concepts
- Context Gathering: The system assembles relevant context (conversation history, persona instructions, RAG data)
- Pattern Matching: The LLM identifies which learned patterns best fit your request
- Generation: Word by word, the AI builds a response that matches those patterns
- Refinement: The model self-corrects and adjusts tone to match the persona
Faithful Use (Discernment)
You're Still the Guide of Your Journey
The Speakers here are companions on your spiritual journey, not commanders of it. They can offer perspectives, suggest interpretations, and present different viewpoints—but they should never replace your own discernment, your faith community's guidance, or authoritative religious texts.
When exploring spiritual matters, it's wise to compare multiple perspectives and verify important information. If you're studying scripture or sacred texts, ask the AI to provide specific passages or sources. Cross-reference what you learn here with trusted religious authorities, spiritual directors, or scholarly resources.
Keeping Your Discernment Sharp
Here are practical ways to maintain healthy discernment when using AI for spiritual exploration:
- Verify Scripture: Always check biblical or sacred text references against authoritative translations
- Consult Community: Discuss important insights with your faith community or spiritual advisor
- Compare Traditions: When exploring interfaith topics, seek out actual representatives of those traditions
- Trust Your Spirit: If something feels off or contradicts your faith tradition's core teachings, investigate further
- Test Over Time: Good wisdom bears fruit; assess insights by their long-term impact on your spiritual growth
Limits & Mistakes
Why AI Makes Mistakes
AI is fallible by design. It can misstate facts, miss cultural nuance, misattribute quotes, or generate confident-sounding answers that are partially or entirely incorrect. This isn't a bug—it's how the technology works.
Because LLMs generate text by predicting patterns rather than retrieving verified facts, they can:
- Hallucinate: Create plausible-sounding but false information
- Confuse Details: Mix up similar concepts, names, or dates
- Oversimplify: Miss important nuances in complex topics
- Show Bias: Reflect biases present in training data
- Lack Context: Miss cultural or historical context that changes meaning
How RAG Helps (But Isn't Perfect)
Here at Dialogs in Faith, we use a RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) system that helps mitigate these issues. Our RAG system searches through curated knowledge bases of sacred texts, theological works, and spiritual literature to ground responses in verified sources.
When discussing scripture or religious concepts, the AI draws from actual texts rather than relying solely on training patterns. This significantly improves accuracy for biblical verses, religious concepts, and theological discussions.
However, RAG isn't foolproof. The AI might:
- Retrieve relevant passages but misinterpret them
- Miss context that changes a passage's meaning
- Combine information from multiple sources incorrectly
- Still hallucinate details not covered in the knowledge base
Asking Better Questions
The Art of Prompt Crafting
The way you phrase your question dramatically shapes the answer you receive. Instead of vague requests like "Tell me about forgiveness," try structured questions: "Create a 5-day study plan on forgiveness with daily reflection prompts, suitable for someone new to spiritual practice."
Good questions specify:
- Tone: Formal, conversational, pastoral, scholarly, gentle, challenging
- Length: Brief summary, in-depth exploration, specific word count
- Audience: Beginner, scholar, someone grieving, teenager, elder
- Format: Bullet points, narrative, dialogue, study guide, prayer
- Perspective: Single tradition or interfaith, historical or contemporary
Iterative Refinement
Remember: conversation with AI is iterative. If the first answer isn't quite right, refine it:
- "Make that shorter" or "Expand on point 2 with examples"
- "Add biblical examples" or "Show perspectives from different traditions"
- "Explain it like I'm teaching a teenager"
- "Make this gentler in tone" or "Be more direct"
- "Focus more on practical application"
Step 2: "Now expand point 2 with a biblical example"
Step 3: "Make this gentler in tone—it's for someone struggling"
Step 4: "Add a reflection question at the end"
Privacy & Journaling
Your Data, Your Control
Your conversations with the Speakers are automatically saved so you can revisit them later—this helps maintain context and allows for ongoing dialogue. However, your Journal entries are completely separate and only include what you manually choose to save.
You have full control over your data:
- Delete Individual Messages: Use the delete option in each chat bubble
- Clear All History: Use "Delete All Interactions" on your Profile page
- Journal Privacy: Your journal is completely private and only includes what you save
- Collection Analysis: When you create Collections, AI analyzes content to identify themes—this stays private
How Your Data Is Used
Conversations: Stored to maintain context and allow you to review past dialogues. They help the AI understand your ongoing journey.
Journal Entries: Completely separate from conversations. Only what you manually save to your journal is stored there.
Collections: When you create a Collection from journal entries or conversations, our AI analyzes the content to identify themes, patterns, and insights across your spiritual journey. This analysis is private and helps you discover connections you might have missed.
What We DON'T Do:
- Share your data with third parties
- Use your conversations to train public AI models
- Sell or monetize your personal reflections
- Allow other users to see your content
